/Long input field

Long input field

Multi-line textarea for free-form answers, explanations, and open-ended comments.

What it does#

The Long input field is a multi-line textarea — like the Short input, but with room to type a paragraph. It expands as the respondent types and accepts soft line breaks.

When to use it#

  • "What can we help with?" on a contact form.
  • Open-ended survey questions ("What could we have done better?").
  • Job application essays ("Why do you want this role?").
  • Bug reports, support tickets, and free-form feedback.

Settings#

  • Required — must be filled before the form advances.
  • Placeholder — invite a real answer, not just "Type here".
  • Min / Max length — guard against one-character submissions.
  • Auto-grow — the field stretches as the answer gets longer.

Tips#

Long input is the field most responsible for low response quality on surveys. Lead with a specific placeholder ("Tell us about the last thing that surprised you") and set a small minimum length so respondents can't just type "good" and leave.

  • Short input — single-line answers.
  • Rich text — long answers with bold, italics, and bullets.
